Due to the nature of the school having many different courses which all have different approaches in their grasp of art, media and design I wanted to create an identity which doesn’t single out one course. I went on to create an identity which is continuous throughout the school and is simple to recognise and can be used throughout the media required. Art, Media and Design comes under the Environment Faculty and because of this I approached the task by looking at how natural groups are currently organised. The scientific periodic table has proved to be a brilliant way of mapping the different elements found in the world. It is a straightforward guide to many different pieces of information. This is a scientific guide, but it is an excellent way of displaying, grouping and mapping elements which are totally different in many ways.
After working with the idea of squares I looked at how images are made up of pixels on screen. Thousands of tiny squares which make up masses of different images which all use the same creative process. I created a typeface which is used for some titles on the signage and the 06 on the rest of the documents, based upon pixels. I created a background which was based around the perfect squares of the periodic table. I chose to use the colour blue as a background because of the natural and environment side of the colour and emphasis of the coastal location of Portsmouth. The text deliberately spills over both squares and gaps to show the way in which all the creative content and processes cross the different courses found within the School of Art, Design and Media. The identity itself is created to represent the school (the main outer square), the courses (the blue squares) and the students within (the black pixels).
I created a poster, signage, invite, and website. Although my identity wasn't selected it recieved praise from tutors. I was then selected to manage the Final Show for my course using a new identity, check Other Work to see how this went.
